25 Years of Spanish!

Today we’re featuring a story from our President, Lindsey Stapel.

As part of Futura’s 25th anniversary celebration, I’m honored to share a little of my own journey with the company and the mission that continues to inspire me every day.

I joined Futura in 2005 as an after-school Spanish teacher in the Madison area. At the time, I quickly discovered something that would shape my career: the powerful connection between language learning, education, and cultural understanding. I loved creating games and interactive activities that made Spanish exciting and meaningful for students.

My own passion for the Spanish language had already been growing through my university studies, where I focused not only on language but also on the history and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. During college, I had the opportunity to spend a summer in Mexico living with a host family and volunteering at a local bilingual school—an experience that deepened my appreciation for the transformative power of language and cultural immersion.

After graduating, I transitioned into the role of Area Manager in Milwaukee, where I recruited, trained, and supported teachers while also contributing to curriculum development and lesson planning resources for our instructors.

In 2013, I stepped into a leadership role as Director of Futura, working closely with the founder and President to help guide the company’s goals, vision, and growth. During this time, I realized that my passion extended beyond teaching students—I found fulfillment in mentoring and supporting educators as well.

Like many organizations, Futura faced tremendous challenges during the pandemic in 2020. During that uncertain time, I made the life-changing decision to purchase the company and become President and owner. With two young children and so much uncertainty in the world, it was certainly a leap of faith. But I deeply believed in Futura’s mission and the importance of continuing this work for future generations of students.

Today, as I prepare to enter my sixth school year as President and owner, I feel prouder than ever of what our team has built together. We are fortunate to have an incredibly dedicated leadership team and passionate teachers who continue to inspire students every day through language and cultural learning.

Futura’s mission ~ to spark a love of language learning while fostering cultural awareness and connection – feels more meaningful now than ever before. It’s what continues to ground and motivate me in this work.

I also continue to be a lifelong language learner myself. Throughout my years with Futura, I’ve continued traveling and exploring the Spanish-speaking world, always seeking new opportunities to learn, grow, and broaden my perspective.

As we celebrate “25 Years, 25 Stories,” I’m reminded that Futura’s story has always been about people—students, educators, families, and communities—and the meaningful connections that grow through language learning. I’m grateful to be part of that story and excited for all that is still to come.

Why Learn Spanish?

The deepest roots are often the ones you cannot see

For 25 years, we’ve taught Spanish—but the real impact goes far beyond vocabulary quizzes and classroom lessons.

Language learning helps students build:
  •  Cognitive flexibility and problem-solving skills
  •  Empathy and cultural understanding
  •  Connection to identity, community, and the wider world
  •  Confidence, opportunity, and voice for the future
When students learn another language, they aren’t just learning how to speak.
They’re learning how to understand others—and themselves—more deeply.
That’s the kind of impact that grows quietly over time, taking root in who students become long after they leave the classroom.
As part of our “25 Years, 25 Stories” celebration, we’re reflecting on the deeper roots of Spanish education and why this work matters more than ever.

May Celebrations

Throughout the month of May, many cultures celebrate important traditions, holidays, and historical events. While some celebrations take place on similar dates, others vary by country, offering a meaningful opportunity to explore global perspectives and cultural diversity.

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is a celebration of Mexican heritage, resilience, and culture, often recognized through music, food, and traditions. While it is widely celebrated in the United States, it is observed more modestly in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla.

Teacher Appreciation Around the World

In the United States, Teacher Appreciation Week takes place during the first full week of May. Around the world, teachers are also celebrated on different dates. For example, Mexico celebrates Día del Maestro on May 15th, while Argentina honors teachers on September 11th. These celebrations highlight the important role educators play across cultures.

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries, but not always on the same day. In the United States, it falls on the second Sunday of May, while Mexico celebrates on May 10th, Paraguay on May 15th, and Nicaragua on May 30th. These traditions often include music, food, and family gatherings, highlighting the importance of honoring mothers across cultures.

World Day for Cultural Diversity

On May 21st in the United States it is celebrated the richness of the world’s cultures and promotes understanding, inclusion, and respect among people of all backgrounds. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on the value of diversity in our classrooms and communities.

Cultural & Historical Celebrations in Latin America

Across Latin and South America, May includes important cultural and historical moments such as Argentina’s Día de la Revolución de Mayo (May 25th), Ecuador’s Battle of Pichincha (May 24th), and Colombia’s Día de la Afrocolombianidad (May 21st). These events reflect national identity, history, and the diverse cultural roots of Spanish-speaking countries.
